Yoga Philosophy Course (20hrs) with Ruth Westoby

We are delighted to see the return of Ruth Westoby to Carlisle where she will be teaching a 3.5 day (20 hour) Yoga philosophy programme between 29th August to 1st September 2019

Ruth is fascinated by yoga both in academia and practice. She is a doctoral researcher in yoga and an Ashtanga practitioner. Ruth began exploring yoga practices twenty-two years ago and has taught for over thirteen. She teaches history and philosophy on workshops and yoga teacher trainings.

The teachers who have been most influential for Ruth are Hamish Hendry, Richard Freeman and Sharat Jois. Ruth was awarded an MA in Indian Religions from SOAS in 2010 with distinction since when she has been studying Sanskrit. Ruth collaborated with SOAS’s Haṭha Yoga Project interpreting postures from the 19thcentury Sanskrit text the Haṭhābhyāsapaddhatiwhich will be released as a documentary in 2019. She is currently working on doctoral research into gendered constructions in haṭhayoga at SOAS under the supervision of James Mallinson. Ruth helps coordinate the Sanskrit Reading Room and SOAS’s Centre of Yoga Studies.

During this 20 hour philosophy programme, Ruth integrates the history and philosophy of yoga with a keen appreciation of the questions and concerns of curious yoga students and working yoga teachers. Ruth will offer six history and philosophy sessions and one practical workshop focused on weaving these ideas into sitting and moving practices.

Ruth will provide a study guide to accompany the lectures and illuminate the sessions with rich visual images. Pre-reading will be suggested, an extensive further reading list will be provided, and many multi-media resources will be shared.
