Retreat Information

Join our founding teacher, Janet in India next year in our exciting retreat at Devarya Wellness, which is in a coastal village overlooking Morjim Beach in North Goa. You can find out more about Devarya by clicking on the following link:

http://www.devaryawellness.com

The retreat is taking place between 3rd and 13th February 2019 and Janet’s teacher Sonja Appel will take the morning class (don’t worry it’s not going to be too early!) and Janet will take the late afternoon/early evening Yin Class. All of the yoga is suitable for all levels so please do not worry about this. It is a perfect opportunity to include a regular yoga practice whilst on holiday and you will be encouraged to work at a level that is suitable for you.

This will leave you lots of time to explore, walk on the beach, read books or just do whatever feels good in the beautiful sunshine and surroundings. We will be arranging excursions to various locations in the area to enable you to see more of India, the birthplace of Yoga.

Sonja Appel

Meet Sonja Appel

“I believe in an holistic approach to the study of yoga, giving people a well-rounded yoga education. I combine alignment techniques of the body, with breath techniques for calming and balancing the mind. I also use focus and visualisation to balance the body and brain. And without chanting or music there is no inspiration and concentration. These techniques are consistently employed to enhance Meditation (the ultimate reason for the practice of asana). “

“The philosophy behind the practice of postures has to relate to a wider focus on all the 8 limbs of a proper yoga practice”.

Sonja keeps up with a daily Mysore self-practice as taught to her by her late Guruji, Sri K Pattabhi Jois of Mysore and her own practice of Vinyasa Flow. Sonja’s Teachers are from all over the world and have greatly helped and influenced her, they are: Shri Pattabhi Jois, Sharat Rangaswamy, Saraswati Rangaswamy, Shri Sheshadri, Cathy Louise Broda, Leela Miller, John Scott, Edward Clarke, David Swenson, Claire Best, Anna Ashby, Daniel Aaron, Simon Borg Olivier, Rolf & Marci Naujokat, Emil Wendel (yoga philosophy), Yat Malmgren (movement psychology), Mercia Hetherington (Ballet) and Imogen Claire (Ballet). She has a B.A. in Classical Theatre and Acting and an M.A. in Contemporary Dance. She comes from a professional performing arts background and has found yoga disciplines to be invaluable in balancing and maintaining calmness in her life. Sonja is a writer and has a certificate of Yoga Philosophy from Oxford University. She also conducts workshops in Ashtanga, Sushumna Vinyasa Flow, Restorative Yoga, Mysore self-practice & Sushumna Yoga Pranayama & Meditation.

Sonja does not believe in organised religion or the dogma that goes with this. Her living Guru now is Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.

Meet Janet Richards

Janet didn’t discover yoga until she was 46 years of age. She was suffering from stress and poor health and turned to yoga as an act of desperation. Slowly she regained her health and control of her life with the help of a regular yoga practice and in 2013 went to India to study with Sonja Appel at Sushumna Yoga. She found this a profound and life changing experience. She has continued her yoga journey training with Bernie Clark, Karen Kirkness, Rebecca Shepherd and Josh Summers.

She is the owner of the successful The Yoga Studio, a small boutique yoga studio and she is delighted to be sharing this Indian adventure with you.
