The History of Asana Through Asana with Ruth Westoby

A history of āsana through āsana: Modes and methods of postural practice

This workshop will explore the history of āsana through the practice of āsana. We will take the long view, looking at textual descriptions and material evidence of postural practices from as long ago as 2,500 years. We will recreate and embody these practices, viscerally interacting with the past through the tissues of our bodies. We will also explore modes of instruction, from Sanskrit counted sequences to self-practice. This workshop will safely approximate historical forms in a manner appropriate for all levels of experience and ability.

Back by popular demand, Rebecca will guide you through this beautiful, flowing Yang sequence designed to balance the deep work done in a Yin Yoga session.  The flow emulates a magnificent dragon taking flight and swooping through the air.  You will strengthen muscle tissue and improve your stamina, balance, co-ordination and concentration as you learn this empowering “Dragon Dance”.  The session will end with some deeply relaxing Yin Yoga and a guided meditation to leave you feeling calm and centred.

As with all Rebecca’s sessions, everyone is welcome as you work at your own pace and ret if necessary.

In Yin Yoga students work the deep ‘yin’ tissues of our ligaments, bones, joints and connective tissues, complimenting our dynamic and active modern lifestyle. Whether you are a keen cyclist, runner, sports person or spend a lot of time running around at work or after the family, you will find a meditative yoga session with Janet. Yin yoga is yielding, allowing and nourishing, enabling you to increase your range of motion, maintain a healthy spine whilst calming the mind.

Janet will follow up the Yin session with an hour of restorative yoga using the hammock. This will enable you to release any tension and float away.

Martyn will guide you through subtle breathing practices to calm the mind, invigorate the body and energize the chakras, as well as healing mantras (sound vibrations) to stimulate the pituitary gland and subtle consciousness.

The asana flow stretches, tones and strengthens the entire physical body with a particular focus on opening the heart chakra. After all that effort you will experience a final guided meditation in deep relaxation – a yoga nidra to recharge and rejuvenate the entire physical and mental system.
